Church Vale

Church Vale

The existing property was a fairly straight forward suburban semi detached building with a long garden. Internally the ground floor was cut in two by the staircase and the single glazing and large conservatory made the buildings performance very poor.

Our client wanted to create a light filled, spacious living area which connected with the garden and incorporated a range of different spatial experiences within a largely open plan area.

The solution was to create a two storey side extension to the property which became the new entrance and circulation area and replace the conservatory with a new solid roofed structure.

As well as the main house an outbuilding was proposed for the end of the garden for use as an office or Gym. The design of this reflects the main building but also responds to the mature oak tree which it wraps around.

As well as dramatically altering the internal and external spaces the overall fabric of the building was to be improved and the entire building has been insulated and made air tight so a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery has been incorporated into the design.

Whilst fairly common now in new builds applying this to a leaky badly insulated Victorian building is relatively rare and required a lot of detailing and upgrading to the building fabric as well as new high performance windows. The result is a building with dramatically reduced energy bills and carbon footprint.

The Landscaping of the site was undertaken in collaboration with Cityscapers, who produced a scheme that mediated between the curve of the outbuilding and the straighter lines of the extension.

A series of different spaces were created that included lawned area for playing, seating areas and water features to encourage wildlife.
